Chris Kanich, PhD

Dr. Kanich is an Associate Professor of Computer Science in the College of Engineering. He has a broad set of interests within computer science and enjoys explaining topics related to current events, machine learning, big data, and blockchain technology, especially as these topics relate to security and privacy. His research focuses on the human and social components of cybersecurity, with the goal of ensuring that people can live their lives safely and privately in a world chock full of computers.
Kanich investigates how to prevent web sites and web browsers from tracking users without their knowledge or consent, and what practical impact that tracking has on everyone's day to day lives. He also investigates the amount and type of harm that comes to victims of cyber-attacks and new ways to understand privacy in an Internet-mediated world.
